The Allan Labor Government is delivering a new roundabout at a busy Connewarre intersection to make roads safer and keep drivers on the move.
The major upgrade will involve construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Barwon Heads Road, Blackrock Road and Staceys Road in Connewarre and new safety barriers.
Barwon Heads Road is one of the region’s busiest tourist routes, connecting Geelong to the popular Bellarine Peninsula.
Residential growth in nearby Armstrong Creek and Marshall has also contributed to increased traffic volumes, with more than 10,000 vehicles using the intersection during the peak summer season, including approximately 1,000 trucks and other heavy vehicles.
The new roundabout will improve sight lines and allow people to find an appropriate gap to cross the intersection.
Works will also include the installation of left and right turning lanes into the Barwon Heads airport, relocating the existing bus stops to the approach of the new roundabout and implementing a lower speed limit of 80km/h, as well as upgrading line marking, signage and street lighting to improve visibility.
Bike riders and pedestrians will also benefit from the upgrade thanks to the installation of dedicated on-road bicycle lanes on Barwon Heads Road, new pedestrian paths and refuges and the addition of new parking areas on Staceys Road near bus stops making it easier for parents dropping off and picking up school children.
Works on the project have begun and are expected to take up to 10 months to complete, weather permitting.
During the works, residents are asked to plan ahead particularly during peak hour.
