Improvements to the historic Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve are a step closer with work to get underway in the new year.
A revised project plan is complete and works to finalise detailed designs for restoration of historic defence structures in consultation with a heritage and landscape architects is underway.
The Reserve is treasured by the Point Lonsdale community due to its spectacular location, wartime history and cultural values.
The Victorian Government has provided $1 million to protect the lighthouse’s remaining defence structures and enhance the area for visitors to enjoy.
To ensure local input into the project, a Project Control Group (PCG) was established, including representatives from the Borough of Queenscliffe, community members, Traditional Owners and DEECA.
Over the last six months, the PCG worked to refine the project and prioritise the much-needed works on defence structures.
The project’s final scope now includes:
- restoration of heritage defence structures, including the Directing & Ranging Station, Eastern Searchlight, Infrared Emplacement and Eastern Gun Emplacement Rocket Shed
- upgraded trails, fencing and landscaping around the lighthouse and defence structures
- connection to mains power for the site and;
- new interpretive signage to tell both the European and rich Wadawurrung cultural history of the area
To refine details of the project, the PCG and project manager Accuraco undertook critical planning and preparatory work shaped by advice and input from Heritage Victoria, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, DECCA; and Powercor.
The project still requires all relevant approvals before works begin, including from Heritage Victoria, Marine and Coastal Act 2018 consent and a Cultural Heritage Management Plan. This is now underway, with boots on the ground expected in 2025.
The PCG has released further details and information on the project, which can be viewed on the Borough of Queenscliffe website www.queenscliffe.vic.gov.au/Your-Council/News-and-projects/Current-projects/Point-Lonsdale-Lighthouse-Reserve
